I’m working to organize a collection of handmade hats and mittens for Cornerstone, a shelter in Bloomington for abused women and children. Can you help?

Last year, they served about 2500 children and youth through emergency housing, transitional services, and counseling. Part of the organization’s mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence, and one powerful way to do that is through education and working with the children of these families. Families in the transitional and emergency housing segments of Cornerstone’s program often leave home in a hurry; they are in a new setting, and I want to provide something cozy and comfortable that will allow children to get outside and play this winter.

I want to collect 100 NEW and HANDMADE (knitted, crocheted, sewn from fleece) items (a hat or a pair of mittens counts as an item), in sizes appropriate for various-sized children or adults, between now and January 15. Earlier is better, but the later option is to allow for your holiday knitting (I don’t want to keep anyone up at night ) and also because these items are not available in stores much after the first of January.

Specifications:

• Items must be NEW and HANDMADE.All sizes are needed, from baby up to adult.Gender-neutral styles would be great, to simplify distribution. Most adult clients of Cornerstone are women, but they frequently come with children of all ages.
• Washable materials are preferred, though not strictly necessary. Wool is great, especially for mittens, but any warm, cozy material is fine. Please include a note with care instructions if materials require special care.
• I will accept items beginning immediately, through a DEADLINE of January 15, 2008. I will deliver the hats and mittens to Cornerstone on or before January 25.
• Updates to the status of this project will be posted at http://christieburke.com .

Maybe you already have a finished item in your stash. Maybe you are willing to give a few hours of your time to a family in a terrible situation.

I hope, if you are the least bit crafty, that you’ll consider helping. These families leave home for a safer environment, sometimes with next to nothing. Hats and mittens are not optional in Minnesota, whether one wants to play in the snow or not — but it’s so important for kids to be able to get outside, and they need to be equipped for that. You can make a difference here.
