Steroids first: I have had two injections of betamethasone for pregnancy-related stuff (we are staving off preemie lungs), and it turns out one of the side effects is sleeplessness. My friend Thad the Neuroscientist explained to me yesterday that the interaction of the drug with the neurotransmitters in my brain increases adrenaline/ephedrine production and suppresses the chemicals that make it easy to relax and rest. So for two days in a row I’ve gone to sleep around 9 PM and woken up at 1 AM. Ordinarily this would be Very Not Good For Me (I like my sleep, I do), but the adrenaline response is just making it really easy to do the stuff I need to do. Yesterday morning I washed all the dishes, changed my dinner plans, and went to the grocery store before 6:00 in the morning. (Today I am less interested in going anywhere, but still wide awake.) It’s a little wacko, but I’m getting a lot done and I hope to be back on track for Sunday.
And now the professional intrigue part: Actually I can’t say very much about it here, other than to note that there may be a book challenge happening in my library in the next little while. Kind of exciting (although that may be the adrenaline from the steroids talking).
