So, yeah, I make New Year’s resolutions. I don’t generally arrive, if you know what I mean, but I carry good intentions forward with me into every year (and I don’t limit myself to the beginning of January, either — any time is a good time to make a positive change).
For this year, the major thing is digging out from under all this STUFF. We have a smallish house, which I generally love. There isn’t an inch of wasted space in its construction, and it is strong and sturdy (though showing its age on occasion). Quite frankly, I would rather edit my belongings than move. So today the trunk of my car is full of dishes and miscellany. I have a basket and a largish box full of outgrown kid stuff to donate. And I am taking the above pictured stack of books to the library for next weekend’s book sale. It’s a drop in the bucket (and Becky says, “Those books are not pretty.”), but it’s a start.
Here’s what this does for me: makes it easier to keep my home orderly and, well, homelike. Makes it simpler to help my children grow into self-sufficient people whose future spouses will not grumble about my parenting skills. Makes it more peaceful to live with myself and to do the writing and thinking and just-being that I need to do.

This kind of clearing out usually helps me keep my head on straight (as opposed to it exploding from overload). I find that I’m usually doing this kind of cleaning when I should be working on a big school project… good luck, and happy tossing.
